Industry NewsUK government signals regulatory alignment with EU to reduce procurement and trade barriers
UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced plans to align British business regulations with European Union rules where it serves national economic interests, aiming to reduce post-Brexit trade barriers and generate economic growth. The policy shift, outlined in a speech at Bayes Business School in London, positions closer EU ties as a pillar of the government's economic strategy whilst maintaining Britain's position outside the single market and customs union.
CNA reported that Reeves stated regulatory autonomy should be the exception, not the norm, with Britain prepared to align with EU rules when economic gains exceed costs. The approach aims to address post-Brexit barriers affecting procurement, supply chains and market access across sectors including agriculture, manufacturing and services.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and EU leaders are scheduled to hold a summit in coming months, with agricultural standards and youth mobility likely on the agenda. Regulatory alignment could impact public procurement by enabling greater participation in cross-border contracts and reducing compliance costs for businesses operating in both markets.
Reeves said: "Let me say this directly to our friends and allies in Europe. This government believes that a deeper relationship is in the interests of the whole of Europe."
She cited estimates that Brexit could make Britain's economy as much as 8 per cent smaller than if the country had remained in the EU.
Anand Menon, director of UK in a Changing Europe, said unless Britain shifted position on EU priorities such as youth mobility and food market access, growth benefits were unlikely to materialise. The Institute of Directors welcomed attempts to remove Brexit barriers but cautioned about signing up to wide-ranging EU rules for quick economic gains.
