Dublin Airport has unveiled Ireland's first pantograph charging infrastructure for electric buses following a €17 million investment designed to support fleet electrification and strengthen sustainable transport operations across the airport campus.
Fuel Cells Works reports that the new high-power charging system has been installed to serve a fleet of 14 zero-emission shuttle buses operated by Aircoach, providing ultrafast charging for vehicles transporting passengers between airport terminals and car parks.
Unlike conventional depot charging, pantograph technology uses automated retractable charging arms to rapidly recharge buses at the end of each route. The system enables high-frequency operations while reducing vehicle downtime and supporting more reliable services for the approximately 2.5 million passengers who use the airport's shuttle network each year.
The investment includes significant electrical infrastructure upgrades, dedicated pantograph charging equipment and a seven-bay overnight charging depot to provide additional resilience for airport transport operations. The project also received €4.7 million in funding from the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility – Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (CEF AFIF).
Aircoach has separately invested €11 million in the new electric bus fleet, with the transition from diesel-powered vehicles expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 1,470 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent each year. The project forms part of Dublin Airport's wider Campus Electrification programme, which aims to expand electric vehicle infrastructure while supporting long-term decarbonisation objectives.
Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien welcomed the investment, describing sustainable transport initiatives as an important contribution to reducing emissions across the aviation sector. He noted that the charging infrastructure is located close to the future MetroLink station, which is expected to further support lower-carbon passenger journeys.
Vincent Harrison, Chief Commercial and Development Officer at daa, said the introduction of pantograph charging allows electric shuttle buses to operate more efficiently on high-frequency fixed routes while improving passenger reliability and supporting the airport's long-term sustainability ambitions.
Beyond the shuttle fleet, Dublin Airport continues to expand its wider decarbonisation programme through investments in electric vehicle infrastructure, LED lighting, fixed electrical ground power for aircraft and the transition of its operational vehicle fleet to electric, hybrid and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) technologies.
The project demonstrates how strategic procurement of charging infrastructure, fleet technology and supporting energy systems is enabling public transport operators and critical infrastructure providers to accelerate electrification while improving operational resilience and supporting national sustainability goals.
