Transport Infrastructure Ireland has advanced to the procurement phase for the MetroLink project, Ireland's first metro system connecting Swords to Charlemont through Dublin city centre. The procurement process covers design, construction and systems integration for the 19-kilometre rail infrastructure including underground stations, tunnels and railway systems.

Business Plus reported that the procurement phase follows completion of planning approvals and detailed design development, enabling TII to seek contractors for major civil works packages. The MetroLink procurement represents one of Ireland's largest infrastructure contracts, with multi-billion euro value across construction, rolling stock and systems components.

The procurement strategy divides the project into major packages including southern tunnelling and stations, northern tunnelling and stations, railway systems and rolling stock. This approach enables specialist contractors to bid on elements matching their capabilities whilst maintaining overall project coordination through TII's delivery management.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland's procurement processes follow EU public works contract regulations, requiring competitive tendering, transparent evaluation and value-for-money assessment. The MetroLink contracts will attract international construction consortia with metro project experience alongside Irish contractors and specialist subcontractors.

The procurement timeline coordinates contract awards to enable construction sequencing, with enabling works, tunnelling operations and station construction phased across multiple years. TII aims to commence construction following contract finalisation, with metro operations targeted for the early 2030s.

MetroLink procurement specifications address technical requirements including tunnelling methodology, station design, track systems, signalling, power supply and train operations. Contractors must demonstrate capability in underground construction, complex urban environments and integration with existing transport infrastructure.

The project will deliver 16 stations serving Dublin Airport, city centre destinations and residential areas across north Dublin. Underground construction through Dublin requires specialist tunnelling techniques, groundwater management and coordination with utilities and existing buildings.
