Industry NewsSwedavia advances sustainable aviation fuel procurement with stakeholder backing
Swedavia, the state-owned airport operator in Sweden, has secured stakeholder support for its sustainable aviation fuel procurement programme aimed at accelerating SAF adoption across Swedish airports. The initiative brings together airlines, fuel suppliers and infrastructure partners to support aviation decarbonisation targets through coordinated procurement and supply chain development.
Regional Gateway reported that Swedavia's SAF procurement strategy focuses on increasing fuel availability whilst managing cost premiums associated with sustainable alternatives to conventional jet fuel. The programme includes long-term offtake agreements with SAF producers, infrastructure investments for blending and storage, and coordination with airline customers on uptake commitments.
Sustainable aviation fuel can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent compared to conventional jet fuel, representing a critical pathway for aviation sector decarbonisation ahead of anticipated regulatory mandates and carbon pricing mechanisms. The European Union's ReFuelEU Aviation regulation will require increasing SAF blending percentages at EU airports from 2025 onwards.
Swedavia operates ten airports across Sweden including Stockholm Arlanda, Göteborg Landvetter and Malmö Airport. The company has committed to fossil-free airport operations and supporting airline transition to lower-carbon fuels through procurement coordination and infrastructure provision.
Stakeholder engagement includes airlines committing to SAF uptake volumes, enabling Swedavia to secure supply contracts with producers and refiners. The coordinated approach addresses chicken-and-egg challenges where fuel suppliers require demand certainty whilst airlines need supply availability and competitive pricing.
SAF procurement costs remain significantly higher than conventional jet fuel, requiring coordination between airport operators, airlines, fuel suppliers and potentially government support mechanisms to bridge price differentials during market development phases. Swedavia's programme aims to aggregate demand and achieve economies of scale in procurement.
