NI Water boosts solar capacity through national procurement initiative
Northern Ireland’s state-owned utility NI Water has delivered the second phase of a solar energy programme at five sites, backed by c.£3 million from the Department for the Economy’s Energy Invest to Save initiative under national procurement.
The expansion covers Antrim, Ballymena, Magilligan, Derg, and Killyhevlin, adding to panels installed last year to bring total capacity across eight sites to c.2.2 MW. The solar installations are projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 250 tonnes by March 2026 and generate sufficient electricity to power around 815 homes, with output used on-site to relieve the main grid.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said she had seen the progress of the second phase of solar installations across five sites and commended NI Water for reducing its carbon footprint. She noted the project is supported by the Department for the Economy.
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald highlighted that NI Water’s scheme is one of over 160 projects funded under the Energy Invest to Save initiative, supporting schools, libraries, and hospitals. She said the project demonstrates collaborative government action in delivering the Executive’s Energy Strategy and supporting energy security, economic growth, and jobs.
Dr Sara Venning, CEO of NI Water, said the milestone marks a major step toward climate goals. She added that NI Water continues to innovate to reduce grid reliance and improve operational cost resilience while exploring further solar investment opportunities in collaboration with partners.
