Industry NewsLongford County Council progresses THRIVE barracks redevelopment
Longford County Council has moved the THRIVE Connolly Barracks Reimagined project into the tender stage, marking a pivotal moment in the regeneration of one of Longford Town’s historic sites. The €7 million redevelopment, co-funded by the Government and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021–2027, is designed to create a vibrant cultural and community hub.
The redevelopment will transform the former military barracks into a multifunctional space featuring a county museum, creative makerspace, podcast and recording studio, music facilities, meeting rooms, and a rear extension accommodating a flexible conference and community event area.
Sustainability measures, including solar panels and rainwater harvesting, are integrated into the design alongside accessibility improvements.
Cllr Garry Murtagh, cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, commented: “Moving to tender is a significant step towards delivering a space that celebrates Longford’s heritage while embracing innovation and inclusion. It will revitalise the northern quarter of the town and create opportunities for generations to come.”
John Brannigan, deputy chief executive, emphasised the council’s commitment to stakeholder engagement and transparency throughout the process: “The tender stage signals real progress towards a cultural hub that reflects the values of the New European Bauhaus and Town Centre First.”
Once completed, the THRIVE Connolly Barracks Reimagined project is expected to attract local communities, cultural organisations, and visitors, positioning Longford as a centre for innovation, arts, and heritage.
The project highlights how public procurement and targeted investment can deliver socially impactful infrastructure while maintaining sustainability and community focus.
