Jons Civil Engineering to deliver €4m R332 road improvement project

Jons Civil Engineering Company Ltd will carry out a €4 million improvement scheme on the R332 Kilbannon Road near Tuam, Co Galway, following a competitive procurement process by the Department of Transport.

The project is scheduled to start on 19 January 2026, with completion expected by the end of the year. Planned works include realignment and widening of the R332 through Kilbannon village towards the local GAA grounds.

A new cycle lane and footpath will connect St Benin’s National School to the grounds, while pedestrian crossings will be installed throughout the village to enhance safety for residents and students.

Local councillor Donagh Killilea acknowledged the cooperation of residents and landowners, saying their “kindness and courtesy” helped the project move forward smoothly.

The R332 is a key regional route linking the N17 Tuam Bypass to the N84 at Kilmaine, County Mayo. The Department of Transport confirmed €1.7 million of funding under the Realignment Programme, supplementing initial allocations announced in 2019.

The scheme follows an eight-year campaign for improvements, first advocated by local residents and community groups in 2017. Funding delays and planning processes meant the project had to navigate extensive consultation and approval procedures before reaching the procurement stage.

The works are part of a broader government programme to enhance road safety, accessibility, and sustainable transport links in Galway. This project reflects national procurement priorities to deliver infrastructure that balances technical quality, community needs, and environmental considerations.

Contracts were finalised after thorough evaluation of bids to ensure value for money and adherence to safety and construction standards.
