Ireland's Department of Defence has signed a €17.65 million contract for construction of a new Army Ranger Wing headquarters at the Defence Forces Training Centre in the Curragh, County Kildare. The project represents phase one of a three-phase development programme for the Special Operations Forces facility, with total estimated costs of €46 million.

Breaking News.ie reported that the funding forms part of the €1.7 billion National Development Plan Sectoral Investment Plan for Defence announced by Minister Helen McEntee last year. Construction work will commence immediately and is scheduled for completion within 21 months.

The project will deliver a modern, purpose-built facility supporting the Army Ranger Wing's operational capabilities to the highest standards of quality and service. The three-phase programme will enhance Ireland's Special Operations Forces infrastructure in line with recommendations from the Commission on the Defence Forces Report.

Minister for Defence Helen McEntee said: "This investment marks an important milestone in the advancement of unique Defence Forces capabilities. Both the training and the operations of the Army Ranger Wing will benefit from this investment and are of huge importance as we fulfil the Special Operations recommendations in the Commission on the Defence Forces Report."

Lieutenant General Rossa Mulcahy, Defence Forces chief of staff, said: "This is the first step in a multi-phased project to enhance the capabilities of Ireland's Special Operation Forces (IRLSOF), the Army Ranger Wing and will ensure the Defence Forces can provide the State with a unique and specialised skillset, providing both national defence and overseas capabilities."

The procurement aligns with ongoing Defence Forces infrastructure modernisation projects aimed at developing a fit-for-purpose armed force. The Army Ranger Wing provides specialist military capabilities for counter-terrorism, hostage rescue and high-risk operations domestically and overseas.
