Green procurement in central government has seen a dramatic rise, with 82% of 2023 contracts including green criteria—up from just 34% in 2022. This marks a critical shift in aligning environmental responsibility with procurement practices. But behind the headline figures lies a mixed picture.

While sectors like Food & Catering and Heating Equipment reached full adoption, ICT lags significantly, with only 29% of contracts embedding green criteria. The disparity raises questions about sector readiness and the tools available to embed sustainability more widely.

Perhaps more concerning, nearly half of all departments still lack a formal system for tracking green procurement, creating gaps in accountability and progress.

For procurement leaders, the message is clear: sustainability is no longer optional, but uneven implementation threatens to undermine collective gains.
