EirGrid has launched procurement for offshore wind substation infrastructure to connect renewable energy projects to Ireland's electricity grid, with the contract covering design, construction and installation of offshore transmission infrastructure. The procurement supports Ireland's offshore wind development programme, enabling connection of multi-gigawatt renewable generation capacity to the national transmission system.

Afloat reported that the offshore substation procurement addresses grid connection requirements for offshore wind farms planned off Ireland's coast. The infrastructure will collect electricity from multiple wind turbines at offshore collection points before transmitting power via subsea cables to onshore grid connection locations.

The procurement scope encompasses offshore substation platforms, electrical equipment including transformers and switchgear, subsea cable systems and onshore interface infrastructure. Contractors must demonstrate capability in offshore construction, electrical engineering, marine operations and project management for complex offshore transmission projects.

EirGrid operates as Ireland's transmission system operator, responsible for planning and developing electricity grid infrastructure enabling renewable energy integration. Offshore wind substations represent critical enabling infrastructure for Ireland's target to generate 80 per cent of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

The substation procurement follows government designation of offshore wind generation capacity through auction processes, with successful developers requiring grid connection infrastructure to export electricity. EirGrid coordinates transmission infrastructure development aligned with offshore wind project timelines and capacity allocations.

Offshore substation procurement presents technical challenges including harsh marine environments, deep water installations, corrosion resistance requirements and remote operational conditions. Contractors require specialist capabilities in offshore fabrication, marine construction and subsea cable installation alongside electrical engineering expertise.

The procurement timeline coordinates with offshore wind farm development schedules, enabling transmission infrastructure commissioning aligned with generator operational readiness. EirGrid's procurement follows European regulatory frameworks for offshore grid development, ensuring interoperability and technical standards compliance.
