Industry NewsCork City Council approves €200m Mahon Point expansion project
Cork City Council has approved a €200 million mixed-use expansion of Mahon Point shopping centre, including 251 apartments, an office block accommodating up to 580 workers and a civic plaza. The project, subject to 52 planning conditions, will add approximately 13,000 square metres of retail space alongside residential and commercial development at Munster's largest retail complex.
Irish Examiner reported that the expansion, dubbed Mahon 2.0, will include a multi-storey car park, a discount retailer and eight to 10 additional large-format retail units. The development is expected to support over 1,500 permanent jobs alongside approximately 365 construction positions.
The project adds almost 70,000 square feet of office space with 40 parking spaces and 250 apartments with 84 parking spaces to the existing Mahon Point complex. Construction procurement will encompass residential building, office development, retail fit-out, car park infrastructure and public realm works including the civic plaza designed to host weekly farmers markets.
Justin Young, centre director at Mahon Point, said: "The planning approval for Mahon Point 2.0 represents a natural and exciting next step in that journey. This development will build on the centre's strong foundations, enhancing its offering and ensuring it continues to meet the changing needs of customers and the community."
Peter O'Meara, director at Savills Ireland, described the development as a hugely positive and demand-led development for Cork, responding directly to the city's projected population growth of 50–60% by 2040.
Planning conditions include coordination with the National Transport Authority's BusConnects programme for internal road network design and restrictions limiting retail warehouse units to bulky goods to protect city centre viability. Additional conditions address landscaping, green roofs, drainage and construction waste management.
